Slackpacking is a style of hiking where you only carry a light daypack with your essentials—like water, snacks, a rain jacket, and personal items—while your main luggage is transported for you to the next overnight stop.
This means you get to enjoy the trail and scenery without the weight of a heavy backpack. It’s the perfect way to experience the beauty of the Wild Coast in comfort, especially on multi-day hikes like our Pondoland Wilderness Trail.
You don’t need to be an elite athlete, but a moderate level of fitness is recommended. Our trails involve 4–8 hours of walking per day over varied terrain, including hills, beaches, river crossings, and rocky paths.
If you’re comfortable with regular walks or light hikes and can manage a few hours on your feet, you’ll do just fine! We take regular breaks, and the pace is relaxed and manageable for most active individuals.
The trail follows the coastline with very little access for vehicles in between our overnight stops. The support vehicle will meet you at each overnight stop, so that would be the only time to exit the trail.
For the remote villages we use homestay (local) accommodation and tented camps (glamping) where possible.
Night 1 & 2: Pumlas Place, Mbotyi Village
Night 3: Lee's Cottage, Manteku Village
Night 4: Tented Camp, Ntafufu Village
Night 5: Amapondo Lodge, Port St Johns
Night 6: Mngazana Adventures, Madakeni Village

You'll need at least 2 - 3 liters of drinking water per day depending on the time of year.
The local water quality varies depending on rainfall, so as a precaution, we will ensure there is fresh drinking water available daily. Most of the overnight stays have rain tanks with fresh drinking water, but please check with us beforehand.

Winter on the Wild Coast brings cooler temperatures, dry conditions, and less wind—ideal for hiking. Winter also offers a chance to witness the spectacular sardine run with frequent sightings of whales and dolphins.
Summer brings hot, sunny days and extended daylight—perfect for enjoying natural rock pool swims along the trail as well as snorkeling and other aquatic adventures. This is also the rainy season, so come prepared with a light rain jacket or poncho.
We're not strict on age limits, but we usually don't recommend children younger than 16 join the hike unless they have a lot of hiking experience and are able to hike more than 25km a day.
The same goes for more mature hikers. Please ensure you are able to cover up to 25km in a day.
